Fishing Tamarindo

We offer full- and half-day sportfishing charters out of Playa Tamarindo, Costa Rica. Enjoy outstanding year-round action for Sailfish, Marlin, Tuna, Dorado, Wahoo, Roosterfish, and Snapper. Our experienced American captain will ensure that your trip is both fun and successful. Whether you are a novice or a seasoned pro, we can accommodate your needs.

The boat, “Tantrum II” is a 26 foot Boca Grande custom sportfisher, powered by a Cummins turbo-diesel. She is set up for serious fishing with a tower, outriggers, depth-sounder and GPS. She is ideal for Fly fishing. We provide top quality Shimano 20 lb. to 50 lb. stand-up tackle. We can comfortably fish four persons with lots of shade and a head. We also provide bait, ice, soft drinks, water, beer, snacks. Lunch is provided on full-day charters. Safety equipment includes VHF radio, life jackets, cellular phone, anchor, flares, and fire extinguisher.

We encourage our anglers to hook their own fish and invite them to be as hands-on as they want. Flyfisherman need to bring their own tackle. We recommend full-day charters when targeting billfish offshore. Offshore we primarily troll artificial and natural baits for Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna, Wahoo and Dorado. Nearshore we troll and drift for Roosterfish, Snapper, Amberjack, and Grouper.

Quite simply put, Tamarindo has Awesome Billfishing! Ideally situated on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, it is close to deep water and highly productive fishing grounds. While we have productive fishing year round, the following is a general outline of our yearly fishing conditions:

Apr – Sep Generally very calm and the fish are typically found very close to Tamarindo. The fishing can be absolutely on fire this time of year for Sails, Marlin and Dorado.

Oct - Nov Can be very rainy but the fishing can be good for a variety of species and the really big Yellow Fin Tuna begin showing up with the marlin right behind them.

Dec – Mar We see our largest Marlin along with good numbers of Sails, large Tuna, and Dorado. It can be windy this time of year and we often have to run up to an hour to the south to get out of the wind, but once there, the seas are calm and the fishing can be outstanding.

Captain Philip Leman really believes that circle hooks reduce the possibility of harming our Billfish and uses them on all his pitch baits. All Billfish are released but we'll be glad to arrange for one of the fine local restaurants to prepare your table fish.

Captain Philip Leman and his crew have many years of experience in the Playa Tamarindo waters, and work their hardest to see that your trip is a success.

Los Suennos Area Fishing

Our new 42' custom sport fisher "Spanish Fly" captained by Daniel Espinoza, tournament winning captain of the Bobcat.

"Our trip in January was incredible we had 53 bites, caught about half, the hotel was great so let's start planning next year trip!" -Emilio Fernandez, Puerto Rico

Just got done fishing with Danny on the Bobcat. We tagged a bunch of Sailfish and I don't know what to put for the address and zip for the Bobcat. Drop me a quick note and I'll put these tags in the mail. By the way, out tally for 4 days: 17 sails, 20 yellow fins including 2 over 100 pounds and 10 on the spinning rods casting spoons and poppers, 2 big cubera snappers, assorted groupers and yellowtail snappers, and a big mahi. Add in a trip to Drake's Bay and an hour of swimming with a whale shark and I'd say it was a perfect trip! -Pura Vida, Bryan Freeman, No. Carolina
